What you will do

From Madurai to Rameshwaram: A Spiritual and Historical Exploration

Pick up from your Madurai hotel for a full-day guided excursion to Rameshwaram, approximately 170 kilometers away.

Start your visit at the Ramanathaswamy Temple, renowned for its grand 1,219-meter-long pillared corridor with intricately carved granite pillars. This temple is a crucial pilgrimage site for both Shaivites and Vaishnavites, as it houses one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shiva, installed by Lord Rama as an act of gratitude after defeating Ravana. The temple’s majestic corridors are the longest in India and are adorned with elaborate sculptures and inscriptions.

Next, explore the Gandhamadana Parvatam, located about 8 kilometers from the Ramanathaswamy Temple. This hillock offers panoramic views of the surrounding area and is believed to be the place where Lord Rama's feet were placed while building the bridge to Lanka. It features a small shrine dedicated to Rama and provides a serene setting for reflection.

Visit the Agni Theertham, situated near the Ramanathaswamy Temple, within walking distance. This sacred bathing ghat is believed to purify sins, and taking a dip here is an essential part of the pilgrimage to Rameshwaram.

Proceed to Adam's Bridge (Rama's Bridge), around 25 kilometers from Rameshwaram town, a natural chain of reefs and sandbanks that nearly connects Sri Lanka with India. According to legend, these are the stepping stones used by Hanuman and his monkey army to cross the ocean during their mission to rescue Sita.

Finally, explore Dhanushkodi, located about 20 kilometers from Rameshwaram. This ghost town, once a bustling port, was devastated by a cyclone in 1964. Today, its ruins offer a hauntingly beautiful view of the surrounding sea and are a poignant reminder of the area's turbulent past.

After a day filled with spiritual exploration and historical insights, drive back to Madurai and be dropped off at your hotel or the airport.
