What you will do

Royal Heritage and Cultural Gems: A Day in Lucknow

Pick up from your hotel for a guided city tour of Lucknow, including monument entrances.

Start with a visit to the British Residency, a historic complex that once served as the residence for the British Resident General. The Residency is a significant landmark from the 1857 uprising, showcasing British colonial architecture amidst lush gardens and ruins.

Proceed to Bara Imambara, an architectural marvel built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784. Known for its grand hall, which is one of the largest arched constructions without support beams, this imambara complex features the Asfi Mosque and the famous Bhool Bhulaiyaa (labyrinth) with its intricate maze of corridors.

Visit Chattar Manzil, also known as the Umbrella Palace, a former royal palace built for the rulers of Awadh. The palace is distinguished by its unique dome structure, which resembles an umbrella, and its blend of European and Nawabi architectural styles.

Explore Jama Masjid, located in the Tehseenganj area of Lucknow. Constructed in 1839 by King Mohammad Ali Shah Bahadur, this mosque is notable for its ornate design, intricate stone carvings, and imposing domes, making it a serene place of worship and architectural beauty.

Head to Rumi Darwaza, an impressive gateway built in 1784 under Nawab Asaf-Ud-daula's patronage. Standing sixty feet tall, this architectural gem is modeled after Istanbul's Sublime Porte and exemplifies the grandeur of Awadhi architecture with its intricate carvings and imposing structure.

Visit the iconic Hazratganj, a bustling shopping area that offers a mix of modern shops, historic buildings, and traditional bazaars. It's a great place to experience the local culture, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy local delicacies.

Stop by the Lucknow Zoo, officially known as the Nawab Wajid Ali Shah Zoological Garden. Established in 1921, the zoo houses a variety of animal species and offers a glimpse into the region's wildlife conservation efforts.

Continue to Ambedkar Memorial Park, a sprawling public park and memorial dedicated to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. The park features grand statues, expansive lawns, and striking architecture, making it a place of both historical significance and leisure.

Explore Dilkusha Kothi, an 18th-century house built in the English Baroque style. Once a hunting lodge and summer resort for the Nawabs of Awadh, it now stands in ruins but offers a fascinating glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of the era.

Visit the State Museum, which houses an extensive collection of artifacts, including ancient sculptures, paintings, and historical relics. The museum provides a deep insight into the rich cultural and historical heritage of Uttar Pradesh.

Conclude the tour with a visit to La Martiniere College, an educational institution known for its stunning architecture and historical significance. The college buildings are an excellent example of the blend of European and Mughal architectural styles.
