Built in 1591 by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shah, the fifth sultan of the Qutub Shahi dynasty, the Charminar stands as an iconic symbol of Hyderabad. Legends say it was built in honor of his wife, Bhagyamathi, along with the construction of Hyderabad itself. This magnificent structure is celebrated for its impressive architecture and historical significance.

The biggest mosque in Hyderabad, the Mecca Mosque, lies 100 yards southwest of Charminar. Patterned after the Grand Mosque at Mecca, its vast hall, measuring 67 meters by 54 meters and 23 meters high, is supported by 15 arches. The western side is blocked by a high hall to provide the Mehrab, making it a monumental site for Islamic worship.

Dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara, the Birla Mandir is a stunning temple made of 200 tonnes of pure white Rajasthani marble. This temple’s marvelous beauty and blend of various architectural styles leave visitors awestruck, as does the legend associated with the deity it honors.

Once regarded as the center of Hyderabad, the Chowmohalla Palace was the seat of the Asaf Jahi dynasty where the Nizams entertained their official guests and royal visitors. Built over 200 years ago, this palace is renowned for its unique style and elegance, a synthesis of many architectural influences, and has been meticulously restored to its former glory (Friday closed).

The sprawling Purani Haveli, located south of the Salar Jung Museum, was built by the second Nizam for his son in 1777. The sixth Nizam, Mir Mehboob Ali Khan, spent most of his life here and constructed a 240-foot-long wooden chamber with around 150 walk-in cupboards, arguably the world’s largest wardrobe (Friday closed).

The Salarjung Museum, a treat for tourists, is famous for being the third-largest museum in the country. Established in 1951, it boasts the largest collection of antiques, with artifacts dating back to the first century, curated under the guidance of Mir Yousuf Ali Khan, better known as Salar Jung (Friday closed).

One of the largest man-made lakes, the Hussain Sagar Lake is situated at the confluence of Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and Begumpet. This sprawling artificial lake holds water perennially and is unique for connecting the twin cities of Hyderabad and Secunderabad.
